The National Theatre Expresso Bar and Lyttleton Cafe London
for kate wilkins lighting designers
When H Studios planned the café refurbishment within this prominent Grade II listed building we were commissioned to design the lighting. Our main concept was to illuminate the coffered ceiling and thereby overcome the gloom often associated with concrete interiors. To significantly improve the light levels and mood throughout the foyer we developed a bespoke luminaire suspended within the coffer that provided individually controlled uplighting and downlighting. In addition, we suspended slim linear profiles with fluorescent lamps and spotlights over the counter displays to give focus and highlights.
Although the nature of the listed concrete structure severely limited the number of positions we could use, the result is a contemporary, lively and visually stimulating ambience in which to enjoy light meals and refreshments, throughout the day.
At the front of the restaurant, to fill the double height space, Tom Kirk was commissioned to design a unique red-glass feature light.
